Wed Recap: Not your typical vows

As you will see in tomorrow's post, I had a big part in writing out our ceremony and especially our vows.  I truly wanted our vows to blend the traditional with the unique.  Instead of writing our own vows, we wrote personal messages to each other which were read at a different point in the ceremony.  But I still tweaked the 'traditional' wedding vows you hear at ceremonies to make them a little unique and unexpected (the mantra of our wedding day).

I also loved the idea I had found on another bride's blog to invite your guests to renew their vows along with you so I wrote in a little bit about having married couples hold hands and just give a little squeeze to affirm their commitment to their vows along with ours.  So here is the video of us saying our vows to one another:

Again, true to ourselves, Mr Fix It couldn't help but interrupt me during my vows when he thought I made a mistake.  I love my response to him and the guests laughs.  :)

To make it a little faster and ensure we didn't really mess up much trying to repeat after the pastor, I wrote the vows out on a computer, printed them out and created these little 'vow cards' that our pastor handed us when it was our time to say them.  Each card had our name on it (Stacey's Vows, John's Vows) because they were slightly different since Mr Fix It's vows included a promise involving my daughter.

Funny thing was, Mr Fix It did not read or know anything about these vows until the moment Lyle handed him the card to read.  In my defense, he didn't ask to see them before the ceremony and didn't ask what we were going to say as vows.   As things went on during the planning process, I began to realize that it was easier to not involve Mr Fix It in anything unless he specifically asked about it or wanted to be included in the decisions.  :)

Did any of you find that there were aspects of the wedding that you either didn't want your fiance involved in or he didn't care to inquire about?

Since we spent so much time writing the ceremony, I wanted the "vows" to be something very personal from our hearts to each other. Although they were short, they were so special and meaningful and I'm already excited to do a canvas with them printed on - they're just that special to me.

Aaannnddd I'm crying. Ha, what a way to start a morning! Those were so, so beautiful. I can't believe you both managed to keep it together so well! I was such a mess...SUCH a mess. I love how your vows were exactly as you described; a bit unique blended with tradition. Josh and I wrote our own separately but followed a form so they flowed similarly. Personalized vows get me every time...

Yay, I love this clip! And I think it's so great that your pastor let the married couples in the audience renew their vows during yours - so sweet and thoughtful :)

Very sweet vows! Nice twist on the traditional vows.

We did pretty traditional vows but I did piece together the ceremony using different examples our pastor gave us and what I found online and then had Kristian read over everything. I asked his opinion on a few parts because I really wanted him to have some input on what he was "vowing" to me. Though maybe I should have kept it a secret and had him vow to give me backrubs every night. haha

I love your vows and the way you invited guests to renew their own promises. And how funny that Mr. Fix-It thought you messed up! Actually, during our ceremony, the priest made a mistake and asked me to repeat that I was taking Stephen I be my “wife,” but I caught his error and said “husband” instead. I’m looking forward to sharing this part from our video once it’s finally ready – hopefully soon!

Looking back, I do wish I could have played a bigger part in writing our ceremony, but the Catholic Church doesn’t really allow for much customization, especially with the vows. I thought our ceremony was beautiful, but I can tell you now that someday when we renew our vows, it will not be happening in the church! They created so many headaches for me from day one.

I love your vows! Ours were somewhat similar, and definitely customized with a bit of the traditional vows left in them. I can't wait to blog about them!

Your vows turned out beautifully! I don't think I would be able to hold it together so well! Like so many other aspects of your wedding, you definitely gave this your full attention too! So awesome that you shared the vows with your guests.

So sweet! The vows are always my favorite party of wedding ceremonies. We're putting together our ceremony ourselves and writing our own vows, and I'm happy that my fiance wants to be involved in the process :)

So sweet and touching! And that was such a great idea, to have the married guests hold hands and renew their vows! You really did a wonderful job of including your guests, in every aspect of your wedding day.
