Music Monday # 4 (First Dance options)

I am nervous about the first dance.  No offense to anyone, but I just don't like those first dances where the couple sways slowly (maybe a dip or turn or two) to some slow song that is really special to them.  The guests all ooh and ahh for about the first 30 seconds, if you're lucky, and then they turn to their tables and start drinking, eating and talking.  Argh...I want all eyes on me...not because I'm a diva who thinks I should have attention on me and my man at all times, but because I want to entertain my guests!  I want to get them excited, involved and jumping around with glee so that they can't wait til it's their turn to hit the dance floor!

Thus, I share with you my hope that my fiance will follow through on his original desire to want to take dance lessons and learn a swing routine for our first dance.  I say 'hope' because he has been sounding flaky lately when I mention looking into dance lessons as if he no longer wants to put in the effort.  I am hoping that I convince him otherwise and I am also hoping that I convince him that this is a great song for a first swing dance at our reception:  Crazy Little Thing Caled Love

And for your viewing pleasure, here's a couple who performed their own first dance to the song (I would actually use the Michael Buble version below and not this one):

And for the cutesy little Disney video for your viewing pleasure, here's the Michael Buble version we will actually (hopefully) use for our first dance:

Alright, spill it, girls...what are your thoughts and ideas for your first dance song selection?  Will you be taking dance lessons and go all out rock n roll or hip hop or will you keep it classic and timeless with a waltz?  Maybe jazz it up with a latin salsa or cha cha cha?  Or do you have that one special song that you will play while you simply basque in a single private (sort of) moment with your honey whispering sweet words to each other about how amazing your day has been so far?

Or if you're already married, what was your first dance like?

I was originally thinking Michael Buble's Sway to a cha cha cha, but now I have a special surprise in store in addition to the song above - again, hoping I can get Mr. Fix It excited about it like me!  :)

I was married on 4.18.09 and our first dance was the duet version of "At Last". My husband was totally indifferent to selecting a song, and I have always loved the song because it's a classic. It's also not too long, which is always a good thing! We thought about doing a non-traditional first dance, but honestly, we ran out of time. I insisted that we have dance lessons and choreographer if we were going to "Bust a Move", but with both of us traveling every week for work, it just wasn't going to work out.

Whatever you decide to do will be perfect for you and honestly, you won't care what anyone else is thinking because you are simply so happy to be married and with your new husband.

That would be neat if you took dancing lessons and did the "crazy little thing called love"! I just picture Dancing with the Stars when I think of that song :)

We are planning to take dancing lessons and my dream has been to dance to "Endless Love" by Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey. The song represents a love that has lasted a while (we've been together over 8 years already), high school sweethearts and it just is a very special song :)

I love the idea of a more upbeat first dance song. I don't know if my FI and I will take dance lessons but I feel like we won't want to do the simple swaying either. We'll see once we find a song!

I've been telling my fiance the whole time that I want to do a fun dance, to start off with a slow song then change it to salsa, but he prefers swing, I'm up for either one as long as we do it. He said he would do it we just need to take lessons. We bought a set of 10 lessons last year but only have gone to 2, I keep telling him we need to make the time because before you know it April will be here!

I love your idea and know that your guests will, too! Hope your FH agrees, because it will make the dance special and so much fun. Michael Buble’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” actually made our short list, too, along with a couple of his other songs, including “For Once in My Life.” :) I love his stuff.

We’re also thinking of “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra or “Kick in the Head” by Dean Martin. We definitely want something fun and quick-paced, and are planning to take private dance lessons next spring. This summer, we already took a wedding dance class with other couples to get us started. Like you, I want the dance to help get our guests excited. Also, since I’ve never had a history of being the best dancer, I really want to surprise everyone by learning a routine and doing a great job with it. I already surprised myself this summer by being a lot better than I thought I would be!

I like the idea of an upbeat song/dance as well! The fiance and I are thinking about taking dance lessons, though I will be the one to sign us up for them. I would love to do a tango - it's such a fun and sexy dance!

I love Michael Buble! We'll probably just do the swaying with a possible dip kinda first dance since I don't want to spend money on dance classes or have something else to stress about. I want to just be able to sway in his arms and have they semi-private moment for the two of us.

However everytime we watch So You Think You Can Dance we joke about pulling out some crazy salsa routine :)

I hope he changes his mind. Although I am convinced you could talk him right back into it, and he would have a blast at the end of the day!

Fun! I agree, the junior high sway is really awkward to watch. We want to take dance lessons but won't be as ambitious as swing (go you!) but we'll probably cut the slow song short and change it really quickly to a fast song for everyone so people don't have to endure our missteps and googly eyes.

Good idea! An upbeat song would be a fun way to kick start the reception.

Oh that song is perfect! Now I want to change ours...

That first clip from you tube is so perfect! That's what we're trying to do. Paid for dance lessons, but they're just boring. We want something fun.

My words of wisdom would be make sure you pick the right dance instructors and they understand your vision.

Best of luck. I think it will be killer!

A swing dance would be fantastic! Jason and I haven't quite thought of the first dance though. We said we were going to get a few lessons. For awhile we were thinking of doing a salsa (we took lessons a few years back).

But I bet we go all boring and dance to a sweet song.

This is seriously one of the decisions that I'm dreading! I am having the hardest time picking out a first dance song...and then I kind of cringe at the thought of the two of us just...swaying around on the dance floor and being totally boring! I'm contemplating dance lessons...but keeping it a secret from the fam...perhaps we can surprise everyone...

I love MB! He has so many wonderful songs I want to incorporate in our wedding. I love your idea! If you can get him to do it, that would be sweet! We don't like to dance so it's something we are still in limbo about, we thought of one song and then we have been wishy washy about it because it's slow. This is something that takes a lot of thought and time especially if you have to take dance lessons like us. GOOD LUCK!!!!
